What was your first role with British Steel and what has been your journey to your current role?

Following my language studies, I began working for British Steel in 1988 and worked for the Commercial department until 2001 when I elected to take a career break. In 2013, I returned to the business as Regional Account Manager, Italy covering Wire Rod sales and now manage a Commercial Sales team offering a range of British Steel products – wire rod, drawn and processed wire, structural steel sections and special profiles.

How many years have you been with the business?

I've been with the business for 20 years and have seen many changes in the organisation, but what has remained consistent has been the corporate ethos of customer-driven product and service development; the passion of our team to work with customers to help them compete and win in their markets, and the focus on continued professional development.

What does your day-to-day role involve?

My day-to-day activities are varied and I'm involved in all stages of the sales process, from new customer development activities, enquiry handling/progress and product development, through to post delivery services. Attending exhibitions like wire allows me to meet with most of our customers in a more informal setting where I can tell them about our latest developments. As the local face to the market, I not only work directly with our customers but I also work closely with our experienced cross-functional account team including individuals from the technical, customer service, planning, logistics, operations and marketing functions, both in the UK and at our sister plant FN Steel in the Netherlands.

Why do you enjoy working for British Steel?

Every day brings a new opportunity and no 2 days are the same. I enjoy being part of a team delivering a positive customer experience; listening and engaging with our customers and working with a highly skilled and experienced network of colleagues.

What advice would you give to other people considering a career at British Steel?

Don’t limit yourself. British Steel offers a wide array of opportunities, fields you might never have considered, and the ability to grow. As a business we serve a diverse range of sectors, offering a wide range of product and services, which means that there is always something new to learn.
