Save Steel Buy British

Community and British Steel call for industry to back UK-made steel

The ‘Save Steel Buy British’ campaign calls on UK industry to sign a pledge backing the nation’s steel sector.

Every tonne of steel made in the UK drives growth, supports skilled jobs, and keeps supply chains rooted in our communities rather than exported overseas. Letting British steelmaking decline further would weaken both our economy and national security.

Join us by pledging to help save this country’s steel industry by buying British. Choosing British steel for new schools, hospitals, road, rail and housing projects will strengthen our economy and help communities thrive.

Public money has given the industry investment and breathing space. Now it’s time for public contracts and industry choices to back the British steel industry for the future.

With your support, the UK steel industry can build a future where sustainability and social value go hand in hand.

Steelmaking is in the DNA of towns across Britain. From Port Talbot to Scunthorpe, South Teesside to Corby, generations of steelworkers and their families have kept the industry alive. Supporting British steel means preserving and developing these skills for the future – skills we will need to deliver tomorrow’s infrastructure and to power the future economy.

From Hinkley Point C to the Alexander Stadium, our landmarks are built on British steel. Energy, transport and defence all depend on a reliable domestic supply. No country can thrive without its own steel industry.

By buying British, we save steelmaking – a capability the UK cannot afford to lose.

The pledge

We stand with Britain’s steelworkers and commit to using British-made steel wherever possible.

We recognise the vital role steel plays in national resilience, economic growth and the strength of our communities. We commit to giving due consideration to British-made steel in procurement and supply chains, helping to sustain skilled jobs, regional industry and domestic production capacity. By choosing British steel, we invest in our communities, strengthen our economy and secure a future for UK manufacturing.

Our supporters

The Save Steel Buy British pledge is supported by organisations and leaders who believe in the importance of a strong, sustainable domestic steel industry.

Founding supporters include:

  • Community, the steelworkers’ union
  • British Steel
  • Luke Myer, Labour MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland
  • Sir Nic Dakin, Labour MP for Scunthorpe
  • Luke Campbell, Mayor of Hull & East Yorkshire
  • Ben Houchen, Tees Valley Mayor

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: "Teesside has a long and proud history of steelmaking, and that heritage still runs through everything we do today. Our steel built the world, and British Steel’s Buy British campaign is about backing that strength so we can keep building with our own steel.

"As Mayor, I’m making sure that happens. Whether it’s regeneration on Teesworks site where British Steel once stood, the transformation of Darlington and Middlesbrough Stations, or the new investments we’re driving forward at Teesside Airport, we’re putting British steel into the foundations of our region’s revival.

"It’s simple - when investment lands in our region, we should be supporting British steelworkers and our own industry to get it built.”

More supporters will be announced in due course as organisations across the country join the campaign.
