A new organisation in North Lincolnshire which is set to improve mental health and reduce the risk of social isolation has been given a boost from British Steel.

Appleby Home Front has been set up by a group of residents in Appleby and their neighbouring communities. The aim of the group is to raise money to provide social activities in these areas of North Lincolnshire for residents at risk of social isolation.

British Steel’s Building Stronger Communities programme has awarded the group £1,000 to help get the fundraising started.

“Appleby Homefront has been set up to improve the health and wellbeing of residents living in the Appleby and Santon areas, where access to social activities and local amenities is very limited,” said British Steel Environmental Specialist and Community Steering Group member, Johanna Geddes.

“The group has set out with a clear vision to reduce social isolation and improve the mental health of vulnerable groups in these communities close to our Scunthorpe site. We’re pleased to able to give their fundraising and social activities a kick-start through our Building Stronger Communities programme with an investment in essential equipment.”

Appleby Home Front will be organising a series of social events and regular activities open to residents of all ages. Their first fundraising event will take place on 14 July when they will hold a 1940s festival on the village playing field.

The group is looking for volunteers to help manage the car parks for the event. Volunteers would need to be available for a period of time between 12noon and 8pm and should contact applebyhomefront@gmail.com for further information.

Appleby Home Front Secretary, Yvonne Grant, said: “Appleby Homefront aims to reduce the risk of social isolation and loneliness and to work with the residents of Appleby Parish to organise and deliver social activities and events that will bring people together and make our community stronger.

“Proceeds from our activities will fund projects throughout the year for vulnerable groups of people in our community.

“Many thanks to British Steel for supporting us in our mission. We sincerely hope to make a difference to our community in the years to come.”
