British Steel and HFRS help care home garden blossom

A sensory garden that British Steel employees have helped create for care home residents has been officially opened.

HFR Solutions – which provides support for our Scunthorpe and Immingham sites – invited us to join them and help build the area at The Goddards, which cares for adults with learning disabilities.

A team from British Steel, including around a dozen of our Scunthorpe apprentices, were delighted to accept and spent many hours at the home in Snaith, near Goole.

The garden, which includes a willow arch, wildflower area and raised beds, has just opened to residents and Nick Granger, CEO of HFR Solutions, said: “The garden looks amazing.

“It was fantastic to see the reaction of the residents when the garden opened and I’m sure this beauty spot will bring them great joy.

“The apprentices should be extremely proud of their efforts. They’ve worked extremely hard and it’s been a pleasure working with them on this project.”

And Dottie Slater, Lead Practitioner at The Goddards, said: “The whole experience has been amazing! The team who came to help have made such a big impact on the guys here and will never be forgotten.

“After spending nearly 3 years locked down it really has been a fantastic experience and opportunity for all. The garden will forever be open to everyone to use and enjoy. A big thankyou from the Goddards. We hope to see you all again.”

Morgan Clegg, a 1st-year mechanical apprentice at British Steel in Scunthorpe, was among those who worked on the project. He said: “I really enjoyed helping out with the garden and meeting the residents.”

Daniel Lo, a 1st-year electrical apprentice, also helped bring the garden to life. He said: “It was amazing to see the garden change as we went along and I really enjoyed helping build it.”

Heather Bateman, British Steel’s Early Careers Advisor, also helped out and said: “It’s great to be able to support such a good cause and do our bit for the community.

“The apprentices put their hearts and souls into this and they’ve really enjoyed working with the residents and our HFR Solutions colleagues.”
