British Steel searching for 20 new employees for its distribution network

British Steel is looking to recruit 20 people to its UK-wide distribution network.

The new sales and warehouse roles have been created as our business looks to further expand the service we provide to customers in the construction industry in the South East, Midlands, South Wales and East Anglia.

And it comes a short time after we took on 21 new people at sites in Wolverhampton, Newport, Brandon and Dartford – the locations we are again looking to recruit in.

Richard Farnsworth, British Steel’s Managing Director for Construction, said: "Customer service is at the heart of everything we do and by expanding the teams at our metal centres and sales offices we will ensure we continue to satisfy the needs of our customers, both in terms of capacity and service.

"In the last few months we have recruited 21 new employees to build and improve British Steel’s distribution network – 11 in sales, six in warehouse roles and four HGV drivers.

"To be almost doubling that figure in the next 12 months is testament to the direction the business is moving in."

British Steel employs more than 4,000 people in the UK, the majority of whom work at our two manufacturing sites in Scunthorpe and Teesside. Steel made and rolled at these two plants is used for a variety of applications, one of the main being sections for use in the construction industry.

While some of this steel goes into major infrastructure projects and buildings such as skyscrapers, we also supply steel through our UK network of metal centres.

Richard said: “Our metal centres offer a quick and convenient way to buy smaller quantities of our steel product range.

"We have a wide range of products and the expansion of our distribution network is allowing us to become even more flexible and meet the fast turnaround times many of our customers need."

British Steel currently employs 190 people in our metal centres – 105 in the South, 51 in the North and 34 in Ireland. The metal centres are supported by a chain of sales offices, the latest of which opened in Newport this month.

Ian Knowles, who manages British Steel’s metal centres in the Midlands and South, has been encouraged by the level of applicants we have received so far and encouraged people to apply for those roles which will become available during 2017.

He said: "This is an excellent opportunity to join British Steel and a team which is dedicated to providing the very best customer care and service possible.

"In terms of qualifications, it very much depends on the role but for me enthusiasm, a willingness to learn and motivation to succeed are just, if not more, important than formal qualifications. All of the successful applicants are promised a full training programme."
