British Steel pitches in with £5,340 for North Lincolnshire sports club

A sports club in North Lincolnshire is benefiting from a boost from our Landfill Communities Funding scheme.

Scunthorpe Rugby and Cricket Club on Ashby Road in Scunthorpe is using the Landfill Communities Funding windfall to install a new state-of-the-art boiler at its Heslam Park clubhouse.

British Steel Community Liaison Manager Rachel Lawrence said: “We’re delighted to be able to make this investment in sporting facilities to enable people in North Lincolnshire to improve their health and wellbeing through sport and exercise.

“The investment will help the club with its long-term sustainability and will benefit hundreds of people from the local area, including many young sports enthusiasts.”

The Landfill Communities Funding scheme enables organisations operating landfill sites to invest a proportion of their landfill tax in community and environmental projects. To apply for a grant from the scheme a community organisation must be located within 10 miles of a landfill site. Further information on eligibility criteria is available at www.entrust.org.uk/landfill-community-fund

Our scheme is administered by the Environmental Body Mondegreen. Anyone wishing to find out if their project might be eligible for support should contact Mondegreen by emailing angelapease@mondegreen.org.uk

Scunthorpe Rugby and Cricket Club’s Heslam Park building opened in 1957 and continues to provide high-quality sporting and educational facilities seven days a week.

Management and Rugby Committee Member Doug Chapman said: “Heslam Park provides an important facility for more than 350 juniors ranging from the ages of 6 to 16 through the summer and winter months.

“The Clubhouse provides a welcome venue and retreat for the players and the building is reliant upon an efficient heating system to provide warmth and hot water. The existing boiler was aged and beyond economical repair.

“As the club relies on volunteer support and external funding, we were extremely grateful to British Steel for agreeing to support our cause through its Landfill Communities Funding scheme and provide a brand new more efficient, environmentally compliant boiler system including installation and commissioning.

“Without this valuable support the club would have struggled to purchase a replacement system. Now all our members will benefit from this most welcome support.”

Our Landfill Communities Funding scheme is part of our wider Building Stronger Communities programme which supports the economic and social wellbeing of the communities in which we operate. Further information about this programme is available here.
