British Steel has recently received 4 new Renault Trucks as part of a major fleet replacement, the first of their kind to join our external fleet.
British Steel colleagues collected the vehicles from Thompsons in Hull, which are now operating on our site.
The T T6x2 Pusher tractor units, supplied by Renault Trucks dealer Thompsons arrived in August and will be part of our external fleet which undertakes longer distance-journeys to our suppliers and customers, with the trucks expecting to cover around 1,500 miles per week.
The trucks are specifically fitted with power take-off (PTO), enabling them to operate bulk tipper trailers and will primarily be used to bring materials such as coke and millscale from our northern mills and Immingham Bulk Terminal to our Scunthorpe site. The trucks will also be used to deliver finished steel products to our customers across the country.
Each driver has received tailored training from a Renault Trucks driver trainer ensuring maximum efficiency and safety whilst operating the vehicles, whilst added safety features such as Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning and side radar ensure that the trucks meet London’s Direct Vision Standard for work in the capital, essential for deliveries to our customers.
Danny Atkin, Transport Manager – External Fleet, said: “We’re always looking for ways to improve efficiency and sustainability across our operation. The turbo compound engine offers real potential for fuel savings, and the inclusion of professional driver training means we can make the most of that technology from day one. The Thompson Commercials team have been brilliant – taking care of everything from PTO fitment to DVS compliance and delivering the trucks ready to work."
Each of the trucks are supplied on a five-year contract hire agreement and will be maintained locally by Clugston Distribution Services, an approved Renault maintenance partner, who are located close to our Scunthorpe site.
