BES 6001 audit success

Following 3 days of rigorous auditing across our sites over the summer, the British Standards Institution (BSI) has recommended certification of the business against the BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing standard. This is a significant achievement and means customers can be confident they’re working with a supplier that’s committed to sustainability.

Lee Adcock, Environment and Sustainability Director, said: “Many of you will be aware of this standard and it's much more than just a piece of paper – it’s integral to all our futures and is a significant achievement for our business.”

The BES 6001 certificate covers all our steel products manufactured in Scunthorpe, Teesside and Skinningrove. The audit to meet the standard was demanding and comprehensive, investigating a wide range of areas including material traceability and environmental management systems in the supply chain, greenhouse gas emissions, energy use, waste prevention and waste management.

Lee said: “Sustainable practices are hugely important to us, our customers and stakeholders. They enable us to improve our social and environmental performance, meet regulatory requirements and the expectations of our customers.”

Issuing this certificate also exhibits our commitment to the UK Steel Charter in respect of responsible sourcing of materials. Lee said: “Allowing customers to demonstrate they’re sourcing products from a responsible supplier and benchmark our performance is particularly important in today’s world.

“I’m really encouraged that we’ve improved our score to a ‘good’ rating in this year’s audit. Achieving this takes huge commitment and a great deal of hard work, thank you to everyone who played a part in the audits, your efforts are much appreciated.”
