British Steel has launched a drive to find around 50 new apprentices to launch their careers at our Scunthorpe site.
The roles will start in September 2018 and are an exciting combination of mechanical, electrical and technical positions.
British Steel Deputy CEO Paul Martin said: “Our apprenticeships offer people fantastic opportunities, with first-class training and excellent career prospects.
“Our Scunthorpe site has a distinguished history of taking on apprentices, with hundreds of our current employees joining us in this way. It’s imperative we keep investing in our people, and our future, and these opportunities reaffirm our commitment to building the next generation of steelworkers.
“The new apprentices will join a highly-skilled workforce and play a vital role in our effort to build a sustainable future for this business by ensuring we continue improving the products and services we offer our customers.”
Our mechanical and electrical apprenticeships require candidates to have achieved, or be working towards, 5 GCSEs in maths, English, science and 2 other subjects.
And for A-level students, there’s the opportunity to join us on engineering or technical degree apprenticeships, giving them the chance to earn while they learn and avoid the costs of a university education.
To be eligible for the degree apprenticeships, applicants will need 3 A–levels (or equivalent) including maths and a science at grade C or above.
Helen Lee, British Steel’s Early Careers Recruitment Co-ordinator, said: “This is a great chance for people to join our business and open up a whole world of opportunities.
“Many people who’ve joined us as apprentices go on to enjoy long and successful careers here. They’ll get work experience, earn a wage, enjoy the benefits of being employed by a large company and unlike students who go to university, there is no debt at the end.”
One of British Steel’s current mechanical apprentices, Eden Bradley, encouraged would-be applicants to act quickly.
He said: “There's so much to learn but it's made easy and fun to understand – and it’s enhanced by the practical side of learning. I’d advise others to join British Steel as it’s a great experience and ensures you’re ready for work.”
Training is provided in partnership with North Lindsey College and its principal, Mick Lochran, said: “These apprenticeships are an excellent opportunity for people to build a career and I’m delighted to see British Steel continuing to invest in its future.”
