Tell us about your background
I started my career as an apprentice with a German long speciality steel manufacturer, and combined this with further education studying economic sciences. I later progressed to work for a Tier 1 automotive supplier and a key European steel tube producer. Next, I moved to the US to sell supplies to steel mills, where I also continued my studies, achieving my Masters Degree in Sales Management. My most recent role was in business development for a European producer of high-strength steels.
One of the areas I most enjoy in sales is developing relationships with new and existing customers, listening to their requirements and meeting their expectations.
How long have you worked in the steel industry?
I’ve worked in the steel industry for more than 14 years and, like many of my colleagues, would probably say "once in the steel industry, always in the steel industry".
There's always something new to learn - I embrace the opportunity to develop and enjoy working with such a diverse customer base, no 2 days are ever the same.
What experience and skills do you bring to British Steel?
I've been fortunate to work for some extraordinary managers and knowledgeable colleagues, making it easy to learn and develop a range of skills over the years. And I've learnt not just from colleagues, but from customers too.
I have experience in sales management and have worked closely with cross-functional teams, so I've developed a strong technical background as well as a thorough understanding of the supply chain and steel production. This has enabled me to develop the necessary understanding to work well with customers and build sustainable relationships with them.
What are you enjoying about working for British Steel so far and what do you think the future holds?
British Steel products are supplied into a wide range of sectors, construction, automotive, rail and earth moving to name just a few. As part of the Regional Sales Team, I'm looking forward to working hand-in-hand customers to see how we can meet their needs. I've already been really impressed by my colleagues' impressive knowledge about British Steel's products and processes - they're unique people and I'm really enjoying working with them.
Fundamental to my role is continuing to deliver service excellence to our German and Austrian customers and developing long-term relationships with them. I've joined the business at an exciting time - with the help of Jingye Group, British Steel will be stronger thanks to all the coming investments. I would like to look back and be proud about being an important part of this change process.
Why did you apply for a job at British Steel?
I chose to apply for a position with British Steel as I could see exciting potential for the company in Europe. British Steel continues to invest in people, manufacturing and product development so I believe that it’s a great time to be joining the team.
What does your day-to-day role involve?
I co-ordinate the German Sales Office activities so will be working closely with the team, who have many years of experience between them. I will be the local point of contact for new and existing customers and manage customer relationships.
What advice would you give to other people considering a career with us?
British Steel combines a long tradition with a modern approach on how to produce steel and I feel confident the business will continue to successfully adapt to changes in the industry. We have the right people in the business to make this happen.
The company offers great opportunities - recently we advertised roles to support increased production at 2 of our mills and I'm sure there will be further opportunities going forward.
