Commercial profile: Peter Joyce

Can you tell us a bit about your background?

I graduated in 1991 and then spent 7 years working in a commercial capacity in the steel industry before joining British Steel in 1998. I have experienced a variety of commercial roles during my career, which include Sales Representative, Sales Manager, Commercial Manager, Vice-President & General Manager before taking on my current role as British Steel’s President of the Americas.

As well as my degree in Economics and Business Administration, I later completed a Masters in Finance and International Marketing, graduating in 2003.

What does your day-to-day role involve?

I manage the sales and marketing activities in North America for British Steel and its sister company FN Steel. In doing so, I also oversee all imports and deliveries to customers in North America (USA, Canada and Mexico) and manage inventory programmes for customers such as Bekaert USA, Caterpillar and Hyster-Yale. I manage a talented team within the international sales office in Mexico and am involved in a range of key projects for the Americas region across all British Steel products.

Why do you enjoy working for us?

The sectors I am involved in include Aerospace, Automotive, Construction, Defence, Energy (Oil & Gas), Rail, Shipbuilding, Yellow Goods and general industry. I really enjoy the various sectors we get to supply into and the international team we have here at British Steel.

Every day is a new challenge which makes the job interesting!

What are you most proud of in your career so far?

I’m proud of the journey I’ve taken. I started out as a Sales Representative and have managed to work my way up to President of the Americas. I also get to lead a brilliant team and be part of a larger group, working with colleagues all over the world.

What do you hope the future holds for you here?

I really hope that British Steel continues to grow and flourish! We are very lucky to have such a great workforce and be a part of a larger parent company with Jingye Group.

What advice would you give to other people considering a job at British Steel?

Go for it! British Steel provides a tremendous opportunity to learn about the world of steel and all the things steel touches in our everyday lives. It also provides fantastic experiences to learn about international cultures.

There are also excellent opportunities for personal and professional growth, while fostering a culture of teamwork and learning experiences.
