Apprentice profile: Simone Sullivan

After finishing college, Simone started her steel career with us in 2021 when she joined our electrical apprentice scheme. With a mixture of theory and practical training behind her, Simone's now working in our IT department and looking forward to enhancing her skills further...

What made you choose to do an apprenticeship with us?

I had heard brilliant things about the apprenticeship that British Steel provides to its apprentices. I've had family working at British Steel and they told me all about the benefits of going through an apprenticeship such as gaining hands-on learning and experience while earning.

What have you been doing within your apprenticeship so far?

So far, we have completed the classroom theory side, electrical principles / science, inspection and testing, electrical maintenance in buildings, three phase power, health and safety and panel wiring theory.

In the workshop, we have been completing wiring tasks and testing tasks in panels as well as assessments to go alongside them, electrical testing and commissioning.

Now, I'm working with the IT team to develop my skills and put into practice what I've learnt so far.

What is the structure of your apprenticeship like?

The first year is spent in the training centre learning the basics and involves 2 days in the classroom and 3 days in the workshop.

The next 2 years is out on site for 2 6-month placements and one 12-month placement before completing a final base craft year in your employed place of work.

Where do you see yourself within British Steel in 10 years' time?

I see myself as a fully qualified individual, having completed further qualifications at university alongside my job role. This will help me progress further into more senior roles such as a team leader position.

What advice would you give to other people considering a career at British Steel?

I would advise people considering an apprenticeship at British Steel to apply if the opportunity is there - it's a great place to be and work. Not only is there hands-on learning but you're earning a good wage throughout the whole process.

This kind of opportunity is great for the experiences and the learning that British Steel provides. They make you feel a part of the family and you'll build amazing friendships as well! In later years, you'll be able to say you're proud to be a part of such an excellent company.
