33 new manufacturing trainees have started work at our Scunthorpe headquarters this week.
And as they launched their careers with British Steel, we've started looking to recruit a further 25 manufacturing trainees who’ll join us in January.
All of the new employees will be trained to perform a variety of roles including crane driving, fork lift truck driving and machine operations.

“More than 500 people have joined British Steel since our launch and this latest recruitment drive underlines our commitment to training the next generation of steelworkers.”
Earlier this year 18 manufacturing trainees became the first trainees of their kind to join our Scunthorpe business in more than a decade. Such has been their impact, and the company’s desire to broaden its skills-base, we're stepping up our recruitment in this area.
Today’s news comes just weeks after we revealed 86 new people had joined us in September, including 41 apprentices.
Paul said: “We require a highly-skilled workforce to manufacture the quality of steel our customers expect and, if we’re to build a sustainable future, it’s crucial we keep investing in our people and their training.”
Our new trainees will be based in manufacturing areas across our Scunthorpe site and be directly involved in producing British Steel’s annual 2.8 million tonne output of steel.
They’ll receive comprehensive on and off the job training, helping them develop personal and leadership skills as they work to support team leaders achieve plant operational targets and product quality.
Training will be provided by our highly-skilled employees, and staff from North Lindsey College.
College Principal Mick Lochran said: “These are fantastic new roles and it’s great to see a major employer like British Steel continuing to invest in growing and developing its workforce.”
The salary for the roles starts at £19,000 plus shift allowance (where applicable) in year one, progressing to circa £22,000 plus shift allowance (where applicable) in year 2, following successful completion of training and qualifications.
Candidates must be aged 18 and over as this is a legal requirement in order to be able to work shifts. They will also be expected to have a full and valid driving licence, excellent communication skills and the ability to work well within a team environment.
Ideally applicants will have achieved GCSE (or equivalent) Maths and English to C grade or above and possess a good all round education. They will need to be an intermediate IT user, capable of using Microsoft packages such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
