Conference room makeover

Trainees from across our business participated in the BOS (Basic Oxygen Steelmaking) conference room makeover to improve their teamwork skills and create a pleasant working area for Steelmaking colleagues.

Laura Marsden, Early Career Development Advisor, said: “It was a great opportunity for the trainees to experience a project where their teamwork and project management skills had to be used. The hard work they put in is evident from the end result of the room – it was clean, bright and welcoming – they did a really good job.”

The trainees had to ensure they understood the hazards and risks involved in the project and made sure they applied the appropriate control measures to complete the work safely. This included completing risk assessments and creating work packs, which were managed through the Issuing Authority. The aim was to make the project as close to real life and give the trainees a better understanding of what is now the standard requirement for undertaking work in the live plant areas.

The total cost of the project was just under £500 which made a saving for the company compared to outsourcing.

Chris Vaughan, Works Manager Steelmaking, said: “I would like to thank all the trainees involved, plus those from the BOS Plant and other areas who helped with the organisation of the project. I hope the trainees enjoyed taking part and learnt a lot from the experience.”
