A university education without the debt - it's possible with British Steel

Our Degree Apprenticeship Programmes are for students who are taking, or have completed their A-levels (or equivalent qualifications), and would like to gain an engineering or technical bachelors degree without the debt associated with a university education. 

We fund your bachelors degree whilst you gain relevant, practical experience that enables you to apply the theory you are learning. On top of this we'll reward you with a progressive salary and benefits package. 

Our scheme combines on-the-job learning with release to our further education partners to ensure you have both the knowledge and experience to succeed in your career.

Giving you a university education without the debt

You can choose either the Technical or Engineering route to complete your bachelors degree. Alongside your academic qualification you will gain extensive on-the-job experience undertaking rotations across all parts of our business. You will deliver roles and projects that will have significant business value, and as you progress through the programme your levels of responsibility will increase.

You will receive comprehensive training on your specific discipline, giving you the technical knowledge and skill to perform within your role. Health & Safety is our number one priority on site and you will receive a significant amount of training in this area to keep you and your colleagues safe and well.

We want to develop your leadership and personal skills throughout your programme so we'll deliver a whole range of team building events as well as skills sessions to help you progress through the business.  

This is a fantastic programme for individuals that want to quickly advance their careers, gaining qualifications and experience without the huge debts often associated with a university education. 

The most important thing to us is your attitude! We want passionate, hard-working and ambitious people to join our team. You must have strong communication skills, be able to work within diverse teams and embrace change. We need you to put the customer at the heart of what you do, think commercially and continually seek to improve the business and yourself.

We require you to be working towards, or hold at minimum 3 A levels grade C or above in maths, science and one other related subject. 

You'll also need to have 5 GCSEs grade C (4) or above including maths, English and science.

 

Degree Apprentice salaries start from £9,020 (engineering) and £15,922 (technical), with a steep progression over the course of your programme. In addition to your salary, we’ll fully fund your qualifications; a significant investment in your career development.

Stage 1: Online application form 

We've set up a simple application form for you to tell us about your key achievements. We'll be asking you a number of questions so we can assess your suitability to British Steel. You can complete your application form in one go or save this as you progress over a period of time to suit you.

  • We’re interested in you – so tell us about what YOU have done and achieved
  • Attention to detail is important, take your time, read over your application and make sure everything is correct
  • Keep in mind the type of skills and behaviours that we're looking for

Stage 2: Numerical testing (engineering only)

Following a successful application, we'll ask you to complete a numeracy test.

Hints and tips:

  • Arrive on time or early, give yourself plenty of time to travel
  • Relax and remain calm
  • Read the questions fully
  • Answer as many questions as you can

Stage 3: Assessment centre 

The assessment centre is made up of a series of activities to help you show off all your abilities in a range of different ways. Our assessment centres are always fun, so please don't be nervous. We want you to relax and make the most of the day. Activities will include assessing your skills against your preferred discipline, a group exercise. Be sure to challenge us and ask us questions; let's make sure we're a great fit for each other.

Hints and tips:

  • The best advice we can give you for the assessment centre is to be yourself, relax and enjoy the experience - it will help us to get to know each other better
  • Make sure you prepare, think about the questions we'll ask you and what answers you will give. You could practise with a relative or friend 
  • Dress smartly and be on time
  • Know where you're going, plan your journey, allow enough time for travelling
  • Bring all the relevant documents we've asked for

Stage 4: Interview

The interview will be with a panel of managers and the apprentice recruitment team and will last for approximately 30 minutes. The interview is your opportunity to sell yourself to British Steel so please feel free to bring examples of relevant work you have carried out.

Offers will be conditional on passing the British Steel medical and gaining required qualifications.

You will be informed of our decision within 2-3 working days of attending the assessment centre.
