Age: 21
Position at British Steel: Sourcing Lead – Procurement
Course: Business and Economics
University: The University of Hull

What attracted you to British Steel?

It’s such a large company and I know that they really take care of their staff here, so I thought it’d be a great place to work. The size and scope of the business was a real drawing factor.

What duties does your new role include?

I have a variety of duties, from doing some weekly orders on various process materials, which are the smaller chemicals which go into the steelmaking process. As well as that I do a lot of research into finding new suppliers, and helping to get better deals with new suppliers too.

How did your degree prepare you for your new position?

Studying modules such as accounting and finance really helped with the IT skills required and of course the numbers side as well. Understanding the economy when purchasing is vital too, so studying economics gave me the grounding I needed to succeed in that respect as I have to react to the markets when purchasing as part of my role.

What are your new colleagues like?

Really welcoming. Everyone is really friendly and you can just speak to anyone if you need help, not just your line manager. The team I’m working with in procurement really has a variety of members and ages, and I think that brings a lot in terms of the older members having the experience to pass on to the new graduates.

What advice do you have for anyone thinking of joining?

Apply early, and show your true personality as they want to know what you’re like as a person as well as your qualifications.
